Monitoring the Regional Implementation Strategy

Since 2002, the European Centre Vienna, an intergovernmental organisation affiliated to the United Nations, has been mandated to undertake various follow-up activities to the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) and the Regional Implementation Strategy (RIS). This work was supported by the Austrian Government (through the Austrian Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs) and had been undertaken with the assistance of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The formal collaboration between the European Centre and UNECE was laid down in a Memorandum of Understanding in 2004. A new Memorandum of Understanding has been signed in March 2009 and is concluded for the period from March 2009 to February 2014, after which the partners will undertake to review the results of the cooperation and decide upon its continuation.

The European Centre's "Mainstreaming Ageing: Indicators to Monitor Implementation" (MA:IMI) unit together with the UNECE Secretariat and its Population Ageing unit (UNECE / PAU), have promoted an exchange of experiences in the field of policies related to ageing, undertook networking and dissemination activities, and carried out data collection, research and analyses in co-operation with other international agencies (such as the World Bank, ILO, ISSA, EUROSTAT, OECD) and also national authorities, NGOs and other concerned bodies.

The Monitoring RIS website, a central tool to the dissemination strategy, supports the follow-up process of RIS for MIPAA, for the UN European region, currently covering 56 countries.

The website provides access to:

  • Ageing-related policies and strategies both at the international, regional (UNECE, EU) and national level
  • National implementation activities
  • Indicators and country facts and figures
  • Publications
  • Networks and NGOs working in the field of ageing
